Property Of Tuff Gong Records

An imprint that was created by reggae superstar Robert Nesta Marley in 1965, the name of the label came from one of Marley’s childhood nicknames, ”Gong,” mixed with the singer’s legendary toughness in his dealings with the Jamaican record industry. The imprint was originally created as a venue for Marley to release his own material but eventually grew to become one of the island’s most reputable labels. The label was housed at Marley’s house at 56 Hope Road in Kingston, where a studio was eventually constructed. Later, it moved to a location on Marcus Garvey Drive, and a studio and fully functioning record and cassette tape plant were built.

Over the course of Marley’s career and in the wake of his 1981 death, the Tuff Gong imprint became one of the most highly respected of Jamaican labels. Marley released almost 100 albums on it, in addition to material by Ghetto Youth, the I-Threes, Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt and others. The label eventually grew into Tuff Gong international. Which included the largest caribbean studios with facilities on Jamaica, in Florida, and in New York.

Marley’s daughter Cedella was appointed chief-executive officer of the company in 1993, and through her guidance the imprint has become a providing ground for up-and-coming Jamaican artists such as Michael Rose, Bounty Killer, Burning Spear and Burrington Levy. Tuff Gong international company has a worldwide presence and continues to advance the careers of Jamaican artists.
